When Should You Replace Your Windows?

Your home’s windows play a central role in its aesthetics as well as its livability by allowing light and air into your home. Over time, your windows will degrade and eventually need to be replaced. How do you know when it’s time to replace them?

How Long Do Windows Last?

On average, windows should last 15 to 20 years, depending on the materials used and where you live. The frame and seals will begin degrading after this and you’ll be living on borrowed time. However, your windows may need to be replaced sooner than that. Here are some of the signs to look for that might indicate you need to replace them now instead of later.

They’re Single Pane

If your windows have only a single pane of glass, they need to be replaced. Single-pane windows were the standard around 20 years ago, but they’re not particularly energy efficient. Modern double-pane windows will help you keep your home more comfortable and reduce your energy consumption.

Your Glass Is Cracked

Your windows are only as good as the glass inside them. If a window is cracked, it’s time to replace that one, and depending on their age and condition, you might want to consider a whole home replacement at the same time.

There’s Visible Damage to the Frame

Take a look at your window frames. Do you notice any damage? Depending on the material, this could take many forms, ranging from insect damage and rot for wood frames to dry rot for vinyl. If you can see damage to the frames, your windows need to be replaced.

You Can Feel Drafts

Do you keep your curtains closed and sit away from your windows to avoid drafts? That’s a great sign that your windows need to be replaced. There should be no air movement if your windows are closed.

Condensation on the Inside

Condensation on the outside of your windows is fine. Condensation on the inside is not. It’s a sign that there’s air leaking around the window and that your home’s humidity level is too high.

Opening and Closing Is Hard

Do you struggle to open and close your windows? That’s a sign that they’re warped. Your windows should operate smoothly.
