Home » Would a Skylight Ease Your SAD?

Seasonal Affective Disorder, typically abbreviated to SAD, is a condition that affects many people during the winter season. During this time, days are shorter, and people typically spend more time indoors instead of being out in the light. This lack of sunlight can affect your mood, making you feel depressed and lethargic. While one solution to this is to go outdoors, that’s not always easy when it’s so cold. There is another option: you could add a skylight to your home so you can enjoy the sun without needing to wear several layers of clothing.

Which Room Should Have a Skylight?

If you want to add a skylight to assist in treating SAD, you need to carefully consider where to add it. There are some structural limitations that do rule out some areas. However, you can add a skylight to any room. First, you need to determine which room is right for your skylight. If you work from home or spend a good amount of time in your home office, that may be the ideal spot. There are some rooms to avoid if you’re looking to get more sunlight. The bedroom, for example, may not be ideal if you’re only typically in the room at night. Bathrooms may also not be ideal since you may not spend much time there.

Where in the Room Should the Skylight Be?

Second, you need to decide where in the room to put the skylight. In your home office, you may be able to situation the skylight so it’s right over your desk or move your desk to be under it. This will allow you to take full advantage of the sun while you work. If you’re placing it in your living room, consider arranging your furniture so that your sofa or chair is located under the skylight. You want to make sure you can take full advantage of the sunlight in order to successfully combat SAD.
