Your home’s windows do so much. They add to the exterior aesthetic while allowing fresh air and light into your living space. As you can imagine, you must make an informed choice when it comes to installing new ones. Use the tips below to guide your decision and find the perfect windows for your home, your tastes, and your budget.

Style

First and foremost, consider your home’s architectural style. This will dictate the types of frames you purchase. Make sure that your windows complement the home’s design and tie in with its style.

Type

The type of window you choose will affect its price, your energy consumption, and more. Double-hung windows are very common and are well-suited to most environments but may not be good options for those who live in very hot or very cold areas. Casement windows are great options for those who deal with winds regularly, but they come with higher maintenance requirements than other window types.

Frame Material

The material used for your frames will affect the windows’ appearance, but it will also affect your comfort. Some materials are subject to heat and cold transfer, while others are susceptible to moisture and rot. Wood, vinyl, aluminum, composite, and fiberglass are the primary options you have, and each has its own pros and cons.

Glass

You want at least a double-paned window (triple if you live in a very cold area). This will dictate the level of heating/cooling loss and is reflected in the window’s U-value. The lower the value, the less heating and cooling you’ll lose, but the more expensive the window will be. However, you’ve got more options than just the number of panes. For instance, the window’s solar heat gain coefficient tells you how much direct sunlight will affect it.

Warranty

Make sure that the window glass, frames, and other components are protected by a warranty. This should be against defects in both material and workmanship. Generally speaking, the longer the warranty, the higher the quality of the window. However, the price also increases with warranty length, so you’ll need to balance protection against your budget.

The right windows for your home will accentuate its architectural style while allowing plenty of light and fresh air inside. They’ll also prevent heating and cooling loss and should come with a warranty that offers peace of mind about your protection for years to come. Contact Rusco Windows and Doors to learn more!
