It’s October in Chicagoland, which means tailgating, pumpkin patch visits, and pulling sweaters out of the closet. We know better than anyone that winters in our area are not for the faint of heart. However, did you know that you should not just prepare your coats and clothes for the upcoming winter weather? You should also focus on preparing your home for cold blasts of wind and snow, including the gateway to your home: your doors.

The Benefits

Taking a few hours this month to winterize your doors has its benefits. Not only can you save money in energy and heating costs by equipping your doors to keep more cold air out of your cozy house, well prepared doors also withstand the harsh conditions better which means your door will last you longer.

The Process
Your doors don’t need a lot of extra attention to prepare for winter, but dedicating some time during your fall home and yard maintenance to your doors – all of them – is a wise decision. Here are a few ways to be sure that your doors are ready to do their part in keeping your home warm this winter.

– Reseal your doors. Take a look at any seam that may be showing signs of wear and tear. A quick pass with sealant or caulk can do wonders in making sure sneaky winter winds don’t find a small hole to pass through.
– Wipe down your doors and frames. Dirt buildup, leaves and other debris can pile up on your door and inside of frames and hinges. Clean it up by wiping down your doors, and vacuuming up any junk that might prevent your door from closing and sealing completely. Use air to blow out the hinges as well.
– Install storm doors. If you have storm doors, be sure that they are installed and ready to go for the upcoming season. This extra protection can save you even more money in heating costs and can keep your home from that dreaded drafty feeling come January. Looking for a quality storm door? Our team can help you out by finding you a door that fits your home, your needs, and your budget.

This month, make a commitment to taking a few extra moments to prepare your doors for our coldest season of the year. When winter winds begin howling, you will be glad that you did!
