Windows are the eyes of your home. They allow light and air in, affect the overall design, and so much more. They’re also a big investment and you’ll want to maximize that. All of this means that maintenance is important. But what should you do to maintain your windows and give them the longest life possible?

Cleaning

Make time to clean your windows regularly. You’ll need to clean them inside and out, including the glass and the frame. It’s also worth cleaning the walls above, below, and to the sides of your windows. This will help prevent dust and dirt from building up

Check and Replace Weatherstripping

Weatherstripping helps keep your windows airtight and your home comfortable. However, it’s not permanent and will wear out over time, use, and exposure to sunlight. Keep an eye on your weatherstripping and replace it when it starts to get stiff and brittle or begins to tear.

Check for Gaps

Check for cracks and gaps around your windows every six months. If you spot any, seal them with high-quality caulk. This will help prevent air from getting around the widows and will also prevent further damage. When you do replace your windows, repair the caulked areas.

Lubricate Regularly

Have you noticed that your windows don’t operate as smoothly as they once did? It could be something as simple as needing a little lubrication. Make sure to use the lubricant specified by the window manufacturer or installer. Make this part of your regular maintenance to avoid sticking or tough opening/closing.

Clean the Tracks

Most windows run in tracks. However, dirt, debris, and even dead insects can wind up in your tracks and compromise window performance. It can also block up “weep” holes that allow moisture to drain out. When you clean your windows, take time to clean out the tracks, too.

Inspect Them

Inspect your windows twice per year. Look for signs of damage, like chipping or cracks in the glass, as well as damage to the frames. If you notice any cracks, replace the panes (or the entire window if necessary) right away.

With a little bit of TLC, your windows can last for 15 to 20 years. If your windows are showing their age, we can help. Get in touch today to schedule an inspection of your home and get a quote on replacing those old windows with something that looks better and is more energy efficient.
