So it’s finally time to get those replacement windows put in—are you ready for installation day? As most installation technicians will tell you, there are some things that you need to take care of before your window installers arrive. The more prepared you are, the quicker you can get the job done. Not only that but there will be fewer potential issues if you have your home ready to go before they arrive.

Clean Up

The first thing that you’ll want to do is clean the area inside and outside of the window. If you have landscaping, make sure that there is still easy access to both sides of all the windows. If not, you can discuss with your installers the best way to proceed. You might think that it doesn’t make sense to clean when the installers are going to make a mess again, but they need a clean slate to ensure the installation goes smoothly.

Move Furniture

You will want to clear a path to the windows and move any furniture or accessories that are in the way. If you have a lot of furniture, push it all toward the inside walls furthest from the windows to ensure there is a clear path for your installers. Most window companies like to work quickly so they prefer that you do the moving and cleaning before they arrive. However, if you’re unable, some companies may be willing to assist (although it may cost extra—be sure to ask).

Remove Window Treatments

You need to take down any blinds, curtains, and other window treatments that are covering the windows in your home. Remove the materials and all the hardware, including brackets, screws, nails, etc. This will make it easier for the installers to remove the old window and replace the new one.

Remove Wall Hangings

You’ll also want to remove any wall hangings that are within five feet of your windows. The installation process can cause the walls to shake and knock down pictures and artwork, so companies will ask you to remove them before their arrival.

When your window installer arrives, you’ll typically do a walk-through with the supervisor or leader of the crew. If there is anything else that needs to be addressed that isn’t listed here, they will let you know so that you can take care of it. Of course, they should have given you a checklist to help you prepare beforehand, too, so use that if you’ve got it. Contact Rusco Windows and Doors for more questions.
