Windows plays an important role in your home. They help you enjoy the view, let in sunlight, and open for fresh air. But they need regular cleaning and care to look their best and operate correctly. The trick is knowing how to clean different types of windows, from double-hung to casement to specialty glass.

Here’s your guide to cleaning and caring for the most common types of windows.

Double-Hung Windows

Double-hung windows are popular with many people. Cleaning them can be simple, thanks to their tilt-in feature.

Cleaning Tips:

  • Tilt the sashes inward for easy access to both sides of the glass.
  • Use a soft microfiber cloth, warm water, and gentle dish soap. Skip harsh cleaners.
  • Dry with a lint-free cloth.

Maintenance Tips:

  • Keep the tracks free of dust and debris for smooth operation.
  • Lubricate the tracks and locks with a silicone spray every year.

Casement Windows

Casement windows are hinged at the side and open with a crank. Their unique design does mean they need special care.

Cleaning Tips:

  • Open the window all the way to clean both sides of the glass.
  • Clean the frame and crank mechanism with a damp cloth.
  • Avoid using too much water because it can seep into the crank assembly.

Maintenance Tips:

  • Check the hinges and cranks for wear and tear.
  • Lubricate the crank to keep it turning smoothly.

Sliding Windows

Sliding windows open and close on tracks, so the most important maintenance step is just to keep the tracks clean.

Cleaning Tips:

  • Lift the sash out of the track for easier cleaning.
  • Remove dirt and build-up with a brush or vacuum.
  • Wash the glass and frame and then rinse and dry it.

Maintenance Tips:

  • Vacuum or wipe the tracks weekly to prevent buildup.

Picture Windows

Picture windows don’t open, so they’re easier to clean.

Cleaning Tips:

  • Use a sponge or soft washcloth with a mild glass cleaner. Homemade vinegar-based cleaning solutions work, too.
  • For tall windows, use an extendable squeegee or hire a professional for hard-to-reach areas.

Maintenance Tips:

  • Inspect the seals a couple of times each year to prevent leaks and drafts.
  • Dust the frame and glass weekly.

Specialty Glass (Tinted, Low-E)

Specialty windows like tinted or low-E glass need careful cleaning to protect their coatings.

Cleaning Tips:

  • Skip ammonia-based cleaners. They can damage specialty coatings.
  • Use a soft, damp cloth and a non-abrasive cleaner.
  • For textured glass, gently scrub dirt away with a soft brush.

Maintenance Tips:

  • Check warranty specs to make sure your cleaning methods follow the manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • Inspect the frames and coatings for signs of damage.

Window cleaning doesn’t have to be a major challenge. Just follow the tips above. With the right cleaning and care, your windows will look great and help improve your comfort all year long.
