Windows are a part of the home that require a little routine TLC and maintenance. These are important features that provide protection for your home and allow you to enjoy the natural light of the sun. Of course, you have to make sure that you take proper care of them to maximize your benefits. Here’s what you need to know.

Perform Regular Inspections

Inspect your windows at least once a year. Check for broken locks, chipped or cracked frames, issues with the glass, etc. There are so many things that can go wrong with your windows. Get to know them and how they work. That way, you’ll know how to proceed when they decide not to work.

Make Repairs Promptly

The longer that something on your windows is broken, the more damaged it could become. A simply lost screw could lead to a loose lock that allows a burglar in because you left it unchecked long enough for someone to notice—you get the point. With regular inspections, you’ll be much better at this. If there’s an accident or incident that results in window damage, repair it right away to prevent further issues.

Clean Windows Regularly

You also need to clean your windows regularly. You should clean them with a vinegar solution or glass cleaner once or twice a year. Many people do it in the spring and the fall, but you can choose when it’s most convenient for you. Make sure that you avoid cleaning them on a hot day in direct sunlight because this can cause the window cleaner to bake onto the glass before you get a chance to wipe it up, causing buildup and further issues.

Check the Caulking and Weatherstripping

You should also inspect the caulking around the window, window frame, sash, and other areas of the window that are sealed (or should be). The weatherstripping, if accessible, should also be inspected for wear or damage so that it can be replaced. These may need to be replaced over time just due to regular wear and tear, but preventive inspections can save a lot of time and money.

Lubricate and Clean Tracks

Over time, dirt builds up in the tracks of the window and they need to be cleaned and re-lubricated. You should use a soft brush and vacuum to clean up the loose debris and a material-safe cleaner to wipe up any stubborn dirt (i.e. a wood-safe cleaner for wood window frames, etc.). Ask your window installer what products are best for lubrication and find them at your local home improvement store.

If you want windows to last longer and provide you with years of enjoyment, keep these tips in mind and keep your windows in good shape at all times. Contact Rusco Windows and Doors for more information.
