Having a new door installed in your home? It’s a great way to reduce energy costs while adding beauty and functionality. However, there are a few things you’ll need to know to prepare for your new door installation.

1. Permitting

First, check if you’ll need a permit for the door. If you’re only replacing the door itself and not the frame/jamb, you probably do not. However, if there are a significant number of modifications needed, you might need to get a permit. Your door installation professional should be able to tell you if a permit is needed and many can pull the permit on your behalf.

In addition to the permit, you may need permission. If you’re covered by a homeowner’s association, there may be specific rules that must be followed regarding the door you choose, as well as the installation process. Make sure you know these, so you don’t inadvertently violate them.

2. Ensure Easy Access

On the day of installation, make sure your installer can easily access the door and the area around it. This will probably mean moving your car(s) out of the driveway. You’ll also need to move anything away from the door, like plants or patio/entranceway décor.

Not only does this help ensure a smooth process, but it also protects your items from damage. It’s all too easy for an installer to bump a planter accidentally, only to have it tip over and shatter.

3. Kids and Pets

Small children and pets must be kept away from the door during the installation process. There will be some time when there is no door in place and pets may escape. There is also the chance of injury if children enter the work area.

Pets should be put up in a separate room and children should be instructed to stay in other areas of the home. Don’t take chances with the safety of either your children or your pets.

4. Get in Touch with Your Alarm Company

Many households today have alarm systems. If you do, you’ll need to contact the alarm company. Your installation provider will need to remove the sensor(s) from the door. In simpler systems, the installer can usually reinstall them without an issue, but if your system is particularly advanced, the security monitoring company may need to reinstall everything.
