Keeping your windows maintained is essential to ensure they remain in excellent condition. It’s also a key part of responsible homeownership. The good news is that there are many things you can do throughout the year to make sure your windows are in the best possible shape.

Read on to learn more about how to care for and maintain your windows so they last as long as possible.

1. Inspect the Windows

The easiest part of caring for your windows is doing window inspections. You should do this several times a year for the best results. When you inspect the windows, you’ll catch any signs of degradation early so you can get repairs before anything has a chance to get worse.

Look for cracks between the frame and wall, examine the rubber seals, and check for moisture between panes. If there are any issues, bring in a professional to take care of them.

2. Clean Your Windows

Cleaning your windows at least twice a year is also important. Dirt and dust can build up on the windows and decrease the natural light that gets inside. When debris is left on windows for a prolonged period, this can cause damage over time.

When cleaning your windows, make sure to use mild products and a microfiber cloth. This is the best way to ensure you don’t cause any damage while you clean.

3. Clean and Lube the Tracks

While you’re cleaning the window glass, take time to care for the tracks as well. Cleaning and lubricating this part ensures the windows can easily open and close. You can pick up lubricating oil for this process. Water and gentle soap is also an option.

Before you clean them, vacuum up any dust from the tracks, frames, and sills. The build-up could cause the windows to stick and be hard to operate. We recommend applying lubricating oil in the spring and fall. You can also do it more often if you notice the windows seem to feel stuck or tight.
