Functionality is a big factor that helps consumers decide which windows to purchase. Different types of windows have different functions and we here at Rusco hope to help you find the windows to suit your home. Choosing a window type can depend on a variety of circumstances: room location, design preference and performance purpose just to name a few. We’ve provided a list of window types that may help you make the decision.

Window Types

  1. Single-Hung. Similar to a double-hung window in appearance, the single-hung’s top sash is not operational. Only the bottom sash is able to be lifted. Single-hungs can be difficult to clean from the outside unless they’re located on the first floor.

  1. Double-Hung. Both the top and bottom sashes move up and down. Double-hungs may be more expensive at purchase but they’re ease of maintenance may be worth it in the long run as double-hungs can be cleaned from the inside of the house.

  1. Casement. Hinged on the left or right to open outwards. To open a casement window, a crank mechanism is used to swing the window open. Unlike the single or double-hung windows, a casement window protrudes from the house.

  1. Bay. Interior space is maximized with bay windows as they project outwards from the exterior of the siding of the house. Bay windows may be a combination of different types of windows. A stationary window is often in the middle and surround by double-hungs or casements on both sides.

  1. Awning. A top-hinged window that swings outwards to open can often be found in basements or placed above stationary windows to allow for air flow or ventilation.

  1. Sliding. Utilizing a track for horizontal movement, sliding windows have one or more windows that slide behind or in front of one another to open.

  1. Skylight. An overhead window that increases natural lighting. Skylights tend to be a bit more expensive due to the increased amount of construction. They are typically built into a house’s roof.

Pella, Marvin, Thermal and Polaris all carry these types of windows for your home. Before choosing windows its important to consider their purpose and design.  With a huge inventory of windows, Rusco has all your window shopping needs.
