Use National Fire Prevention Month to protect your loved ones.

October is Fire Prevention Month! Many of us become complacent when it comes to fire prevention in our homes. The Rusco team has witnessed the damage and devastation a fire can do to your home and to your family. We take fire prevention very seriously in the Rusco family and this month we want to provide your family safety measures to help you prevent fires in your home.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, in 2011 US fire departments responded to 370,000 home structure fires. Cooking is the leading cause of home fires, followed by heating equipment. Two of every fire home fires start in the kitchen, with unattended cooking being the factor in 34% of fires. Ranges accounted for 58% of home cooking fire incidents and ovens accounted for 16%.

Heating equipment is the second highest reason for a house fire, primarily due to failure to clean correctly and frequently. Among these include portable or fixed space heaters, including wood stoves with account for 32% of home heating fires. Most fires occurred from heating equipment being too close to items that can burn including furniture, clothing, mattresses or bedding.

Smoking is the third reason for home fires. Sleep was a factor in one-third of those home fires, resulting in 580 deaths.
Electrical failure or malfunctions causes an average of almost 50,000 home fires per year. This includes washer and dryers, fans, or air conditioning equipment.
Candles are another leading cause of home fires. On average, 32 home candle fires are reported per day. Roughly one-third of these fires start in the bedroom and most fires happen when the candle is burning too close to another object.

Now that you know some of the facts about fire, it’s time to have a discussion with your family on just how easy it is for a fire to start and spread. Rusco can help people recover after a devastating fire. Protect your home so that you do not have to deal with such a disaster.
